1-Day Workshop

When Food is the Enemy:

An Introduction to Working with Eating Disorders for Counsellors

Date: 5th October 2019

Time: Registration 9.30am. Workshop: 10am to 4pm

Venue: Field Place Manor House and Barns, Worthing, BN13 1NP

About the workshop:

This 1-day eating disorder training for counsellors is focused on helping you develop a more thorough understanding of the different diagnoses of eating disorders; how they might present in the counselling room, common comorbidity, the risks involved in working with this client group, how to manage those risks and interventions to incorporate into your work with clients struggling with food, self-esteem and body image difficulties.

Who is it for?

The training is aimed at both students and practicing counsellors. It will be of particularly benefit to those who have had little or no training in eating disorders in the past who want to be prepared for when the situation arises, which undoubtedly it will.

Due to the risks involved in taking on clients with an eating disorder, even if it isn’t the presenting problem, it is essential that counsellors have a basic understanding of this client group; know when to refer on and have some tools to help unpick some of the underlying psychological processes.

What will I do on this workshop?

The workshop will be a mix of didactic training, group discussion and experiential exercises. Some of the skills you will learn will be taken from cognitive behavioural therapy which has been shown to be particularly effective for clients suffering with bulimia nervosa. There will be the opportunity to reflect on your own relationship with food and body image and time for practicing new skills.

Alison will share some case studies of clients with eating disorders to bring to life some of the learning and skills you will be practicing.
